Press Release: Andrew Cornell Robinson’s Ceramics Featured in the exhibition The Pagans: Effigies, Graven Images & Sublime Enchantments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 9, 2025

New York, NY — Artist Andrew Cornell Robinson is excited to announce that his new ceramics series, Confabulations, Fantabulosas, Las Monstras, is featured in the exhibition Pagans, Equity Gallery. This compelling group exhibition explores the complexities of navigating an increasingly chaotic world through a diverse collection of works that fuse mythology, ritual, and personal storytelling.

The exhibition, curated by Michael Gormley, includes works by artists such as Viktoriya Basina, Miguel Otero Fuentes, Pablo Garcia, Judy Glantzman, Amy Hill, Julian Kalwinowski, Tine Kindermann, Dario Mohr, Sean O’Connor, Wade Schaming, Manju Shandler, Carri Skoczek, Christopher Tanner, and Patricia Watwood, draws its inspiration from Dante’s Inferno, specifically the passage referencing “Limbo” and its virtuous pagans, whose struggles mirror our own attempts to find meaning and purpose in a turbulent world.

In his latest work, Confabulations, Fantabulosas, Las Monstras, Robinson explores the intersection of memory, identity, and erasure, using his signature style of abstracted figurations printed and painted onto bold ceramic standing stoneware forms. The box like ceramic surfaces evoke both the grotesque and the beautiful, embodying monstrous creatures based on matinee horror film characters and ghouls from haunted houses of Robinson’s youthful summers spent at the Jersey Shore amusement parks that stand as metaphors for fear and freedom, transformation, and survival.

Drawing on themes of myth and marginalization, Robinson’s work in this exhibition aligns with the show’s central narrative: “a monstrous clap of thunder” that shatters complacency, awakening a new sense of urgency and purpose. Through his ceramics, Robinson invites viewers to confront their own fractured relationships with the world and to embrace the radical acceptance that pushes both artist and audience forward in pursuit of something greater.

“Artists are adept at managing the disconnect between aspiration and reality,” says Robinson. “In Confabulations, Fantabulosas, Las Monstras, I examine how fantasy, memory, and identity can intertwine in powerful, unexpected ways. The work is a reflection of both personal and collective histories, as we all try to navigate an increasingly fragmented world.”
